LONDON– Got cancer? If you do, a new device could make getting rid of it a little better.
Researchers at London’s Imperial College have created the “iKnife,” a device that uses heat to cut through tissue and then analyzes the smoke given off to distinguish cancerous cells from non-cancerous ones.
Right now, one in five women who have lumpectomies have to go back to have additional tissue removed. The i-Knife could help prevent that problem.
A study of the device at Imperial College with 91 test subjects proved to be 100% successful. Those are promising results, but a bigger sample is needed.
Still, if the iKnife prevents even a few folks from having to go through extra surgeries, then cut to the chase and bring it on!
