HOUSTON – Who doesn’t love a nap? But catching some Z’s in the middle of the road probably isn’t a good idea. One sleeping driver (yes, a sleeping driver) woke up to a nightmare.

At around 3 am, a Houston police officer found the man napping in his parked car in the main lane on the North Sam Houston Parkway at Ella.

“The officer held the handle a couple of times. He raised up on the handle and tried to open the door,’ said Sgt. A. Semein, with HPD. ‘The suspect wakes up, looks at the officer. And the officer is not only in uniform, but he identified himself as a Houston police officer.  And the suspect takes off.”

A chase ensued for about 10 miles, going eastbound on the North Sam Houston Parkway, to the Hardy Toll Road, crossing over on the Hardy airport connector, and on to JFK. The chase finally ended at Bush Intercontinental Airport, near terminal D.

“He hit a guardrail, losing control of his vehicle, and his vehicle came to a stop,’ said Semein.

The suspect’s excuse? He told police he thought someone was trying to rob him. Doesn’t look like the police bought it: the suspect has been arrested for DWI and felony evading. With charges like that, he’ll need to rest up for his court appearance.
