MACKINAK ISLAND, MI – Now slow down and take it easy. Breathe! This is the time to realize that the universe loves you, that every thorn has a rose and you’re welcome to smell it. It’s June 19th: International Sauntering Day.
Traffic jams, the news about Iraq, mortgage payments, Beyonce’s sister — we live an unconscious life, fast and furious, and we tend to forget there’s beauty everywhere. The tradition of World Sauntering Day started in 1979 in Michigan, in response to the increasing popularity of jogging. W. T. Rabe, its creator, believed we should all stop for a moment to enjoy the world around us.
The dictionary says that sauntering means to walk in a slow and relaxed way, often in no particular direction. Pretty much what you do when you’ve had one too many, but in this case it’s all about being open to infinity.
“It reminds us to stop all that worrying, busyness and really appreciate what we have right now,” says Yoga instructor Heidi Lehto.
Feeling good? Well done! So now that your spirit has had time to rest, why don’t you speed it up a bit and let’s get back to business.
