HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Texans wrapped up there football mini-camp and will have to wait another month before training camp begins at the end of July. The time spent away from the practice fields will still be an important time for coaches and players to use.
Texans head coach Bill O’Brien says, “It’s a crucial time. You know it’s really for the players, it’s not really a vacation time, they need to make sure that they stay in condition, that they stay knowledgeable with the playbook and stay strong and do the things necessary to come back in the best shape of their lives,”
Linebacker Jadeveon Clowney adds, “This month right here coming up when everyone is out and nobody is here, how do I take this time and get better as football players and that’s what I’m going to do.”
The best part of practice though was when offensive lineman David Quessenberry, who’s battling cancer, showed up to practice to hang out and talk with his teammates.
O’Brien says, “The doctors let him come to practice and say a few words to the team and I know it meant a lot to the team and I know it meant a lot to him.
Clowney adds, “It was a special moment you know to just know that he is fighting and what he is going through. The whole team is behind him and that’s a good thing.”
Offensive lineman Ben Jones says, “It takes a man to go out there and see all the guys and we know he is struggling, know he’s hurting, know he’s tired. It means a lot to us, he’s going to fight this thing and be back with us one day. That sinks deep into the offensive line. Coming from a guy like that who is doing chemo and working that hard, it makes our day look easy.”
While the game is all about winning, it’s battles like Quessenberry’s that put the true meaning on what the game really should be about which is supporting each other like family.
