PEREVALNOYE, UKRAINE – As we gear up for the 2016 presidential election, Crimea held major a vote of its own Sunday on whether the peninsula should quit Ukraine to become a part of Russia.

Voter turnout was reportedly greater than any U.S. presidential election since at least 1900, and exit polls suggest the referendum will pass by a landslide.

This is not exactly a surprise, considering nearly 60 percent of Crimea residents are ethnically Russian, but whether it was a fair vote is up for debate.

In any case, our government has made its stance on this vote pretty clear.

“Neither we nor the international community will recognize the result of this referendum,” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said recently.

Move over Dostoyevsky — this Russian drama is showing no signs of ending anytime soon.
