WASHINGTON, D.C. – Being selfless can be tough, especially when it comes to money. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is a walking definition of selfless.
He wants to show support to the thousands of employees impacted by the mandatory budget cuts affecting government workers. So even though he doesn’t have to, he’s giving up some of his salary.
He’s going to write a check to the Treasury Department for up to 14 days of pay. He says he’s giving up the same amount that a furlough would have cost him. In Hagel’s case, we figured out that’s somewhere in the ballpark of $7,700. Hagel makes nearly $200,000 a year.
