NEW YORK, NY – Members of the explorers club gather every year at Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan for an annual black tie dinner which is also open to the public to help increase membership.
The dinner honors members like director James Cameron and astronaut John Glenn, and promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space.
But it’s not the guest list that has everyone’s mouthwatering. It’s the menu.
To get the party started, waiter’s passes around hors d’oeuvres topped with cockroaches, scorpions and meal worms.
Other dishes are made with goat penis and testicles, camel, earthworms and rattlesnake.
A full-sized, roasted ostrich is also on display with its long neck propped by a wire as waiter’s slices meaty portions for esteemed diners. A whole elk, a goat, a beaver and muskrats is also carved and served.
This 109-year-old adventurers’ fraternity certainly has eccentric tastes.
Club members say, “The hope is that you’ll see something that you think is despicable, and you’re willing to try it. That’s where the adventure comes in.”
Adventure on a plate! Now there’s a concept.
