PUERTO LEMPIRA, HONDURAS – Six U.S. citizens have been charged with illegal weapons possession after Honduran police found registered guns on their ship.
The crew members—who range between 25 and 60 years old—were on a mission to find wreckage left at the bottom of the sea.
But their quest was cut short when they were arrested three weeks ago.
And they’ve been sitting in a Honduran jail ever since.
The ship’s captain says the weapons were there to protect the crew against pirates.
But a Honduran lawyer says the crew could face up to 16 years in prison regardless of why the weapons were on board.
Talk about having sinking feeling.
