MUNSTER, IN – If Joe Camel is any indication, camels probably don’t have the healthiest lungs.
But who would have guessed their respiratory issues could be passed on to humans?
The CDC has confirmed an illness that likely originated in camels has made its way to the U.S.
One case of “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome,” or MERS, was discovered at community hospital in Munster, Indiana.
The infected patient recently traveled to Saudi Arabia, where most of the known MERS cases have occurred, and is currently being treated in isolation.
It’s a little early to start freaking out too much – so far fewer than 300 have been infected worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
Researchers say it doesn’t seem to spread very easily. But hey, a little extra hand-washing never hurt anyone.
