WASHINGTON, DC – We all knew this was coming. Congress has begun its assault on assault weapons.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) will introduce a bill to ban the sale of about 150 types of firearms and high-capacity magazines, along with some rifles and handguns.

This bill updates a previous assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. Feinstein says her bill protects about 2,200 specifically named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes.

“No weapon is taken from anyone,’ Feinstein said. ‘The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time.”

Feinstein pointed out that in her view, the only reason to have assault weapons is to kill large numbers of people.

That’s probably what’s disturbing some parents in one California city where the school district recently bought a dozen assault rifles for its schools.

The Fontana schools bought them last fall and received them before Sandy Hook.

“We unfortunately do have children who come to school with sometimes plastic weapons or real weapons,’ noted parent and school board member Leticia Garcia. ‘Does that put them at risk of being, as our chief of police has stated last night, being neutralized and killed?’

The district has 44 schools. They’ll keep the weapons in safes at the schools or secured in patrol cars. Seems for one district, at least, school safety just got more dangerous.
