ANTARCTICA – After ten days trapped on a ship that was also trapped in the sea-ice of Antarctica, 52 scientists and journalists are on the move, another step closer to getting home.
A Chinese helicopter rescued them Thursday and now they’re on an Australian icebreaker.
Too bad it’s not quite over just yet. They’re not expected to make it back home until the middle of the month.
Now the big question remains – do the rescuers need rescuing?!
A Chinese icebreaker whose helicopter airlifted dozens of passengers is now worried about its own situation.
According to Australian authorities, the Chinese vessel, the Xue Long, “has concerns about their ability to move through heavy ice in the area.”
As a result, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority placed the Australian ship carrying the rescued passengers on standby in case they need to go back to help.
The plan is to get the Chinese ship out of the thick ice early Saturday at a point when tidal conditions are most favorable – good luck!
