HOUSTON, TX – Imagine the worst, an accident, a severe injury; that’s exactly what happened to Dominique Malard last April. He broke his neck diving in a shallow pool. Sounds bad, but in a strange way, that’s where the miracle of this story begins.

Leticia, Dominique’s 9-year-old daughter, was the first to come to his aid. She dove into the pool and brought him to the surface. Malard was stabilized and after observation for 3 weeks underwent surgery.

After all that, Dominique and his family wanted to give back, to show appreciation to all those who took care of him and led him back on the road to recovery. A $10,000 donation to refurbish the nurses’ lounge in the neurological ICU.

Malard explained, “The process of caring like they do every day involves love. They love the patient, the patient feels it and that’s how we come back.

Dana Bjarnason, PhD, Rn, Chief Nurse at Ben Taub Hospital responded to Malard, “When somebody notices and somebody makes a gift like you have made to us, and tells us time and again in the way that you have told us, it is humbling and it is rewarding.”

But for Dominique, it’s a small gesture to say thank you for the gift of a healthy life.
