WASHINGTON D.C. – It’s a victory for same-sex couples across the country. In a landmark decision, the U.S. Treasury has announced that same-sex couples who are legally married will now be able to receive the same tax benefits as straight married couples.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court struck down the defense of marriage act and its effects will be recognized nationwide, even in states that don’t recognize gay marriage.

For years, married same-sex couples have been required to file federal taxes separately. The decision means those couple will now be able to file jointly and to list their spouses as dependents and other such benefits that have previously been reserved for traditional families.

And while individual states may not recognize same-sex marriages, the IRS’s decision could have a trickle-down effect, especially for those that collect state-income taxes.

So whether you agree with same-sex marriage or not, the folks at the treasury department have made it clear they’re happy to take money from anyone.
