HOUSTON, TX – A celebration, five decades in the making. On this day in 1963, a game changer in the Civil Rights movement.

As in so many cities across America, Houstonians gather at City Hall to “Let Freedom Ring” on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream” speech.

Bells rang for one minute at the moment King’s speech began so long ago.

“Today is about commemorating the articulation of a vision of America,” said Mayor Annise Parker.

“It means so much to me because I’m looking forward to a better life for my grandchildren,” said Janice Wright.

Meanwhile, thousands gather in Washington, D.C. to mark the anniversary of the speech and the March on Washington.

Today, just as it was 50 years ago… The gathering at the National Mall reflecting pool to reflect on where we’ve come from, and how far we have left to go.
