HOUSTON, TX – The end of the month is right around the corner and you know what that means: the eleventh annual Houston Restaurant Weeks will be coming to a close. But before we say farewell to another year of good food and giving, let’s take a peek at a new-kid-on-the-block, so to speak. If you know Ouisie’s Table, you’ll fit right in at The Bird and The Bear.
“You’ve got to be part of the community,’ says co-owner Wafi Dinari, ‘it’s not a me, me thing.”
The Bird and The Bear is a new twist on old-school. From the owners of Ouisie’s table, the little place on Westheimer is spreading its wings and moving away from the pack and like any restaurant worth its salt, it’s doing its part this month to help out the food bank.
“We did over $20,000, each restaurant, that was donated to the food bank.’ Dinari says of last year’s participation. ‘That is amazing. It’s warming to the heart to know that’s all going to an organization that helps the needy of Houston.”
If you’re not familiar with the concept, Chew on This: Houston Restaurant Weeks is a month-long celebration of area restaurants giving back a part of their proceeds to the food bank. Not every restaurant in town participates, which is what makes the ones that do so special.
“It’s a teamwork from all restaurants, hotels and such,’ Dinari says, ‘to support your community — the needs of your community.”
The Bird and The Bear has put together a special menu for the occasion. Everything from fillet mignon to seared trout to a whole laundry list of appetizers and desserts. All for a special price and all for a donation to the food bank.
Oh, and don’t forget the calamari.
“People love it,’ Dinari exclaims. ‘They can’t stop ordering this thing.”
So while there’s a little time left, pull up a chair, order a round, and do your part to help out, too. After all, giving back to the community never tasted so good.
