HOUSTON, TX – Five decades later, the king still reigns. August 28th marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech and the March on Washington. Houston plans to mark the occasion during the nationwide “Let Freedom Ring” event.

“We’re asking churches to briefly ring their church bells, people to ring hand bells, we’ll have a bell outside city hall on the steps,” said Mayor Annise Parker.

Bells will ring at 2 pm Houston time, the same time of day that Dr. King gave his famous speech.

“It is designed not to be about politics but about coming together as a community and realizing that there’s still a dream of equality that we need to pursue,” said Mayor Parker.

A dream that will hopefully become a reality sooner than later.
