If the saying is true “You Are What You Wear” The Children’s Place is sending the wrong message to little girls.
When I think of this kids store I don’t picture sexist graphic t-shirts. But, apparently the retailer is going for a new look.
The Children’s Place has pulled a shirt off of the shelf after complaints of it being sexist towards young girls. The purple shirt lists a girl’s best subjects: “Shopping, Music, and Dancing.” But when it comes to Math the box is unchecked and says “Well Nobody’s Perfect”. Way to dumb down a t-shirt and play into the female stereotypes at such a young age.
Meanwhile, the boy’s t-shirts hail them as super heroes and athletes.
No surprise, parents were outraged over the girls tee. The Children’s Place tweeted out an apology saying, “We take feedback from our customers seriously. We pulled the t shirt from our stores and express apologies to anyone we may have offended.”
People should be offended, especially women. There’s this false notion that girls are worse at math than boys.
But, according to Live Science, in the U.S. girls perform on average as well as boys on standardized math tests. Girls in the United States are now taking calculus in high school at the same rate as boys, and the percentage of U.S. doctorates in the mathematical sciences awarded to women has climbed to 30 percent in the 21st century, up from 5 percent in the 1950s.
Children’s Place, you might want to get with the times and try something new on for size.
And that’s today’s helping of The Online Dish with Maggie.
